My topic of interest for this research is China’s Islamic Frontiers. It strategically discusses both the frontier aspect and minority aspect of the group theme. Currently, the Muslims of China take up to 2% of the country’s 1.4 billion population and are growing exponentially. However, the appearance of Islam to the People’s Republic of China go back to as early as the Tang Dynasty. Since then, the religion and its followers have gone through a series of oppression and mistreatment which are still ongoing to this present day.

The common misconception that is sometimes believed is that Muslims in China are converts. While there are definitely plenty cases of such, they are essentially descendants of Muslims from the Middle East who have migrated to China for one reason or another. With each dynasty, the China Muslims evolve in terms of their significance, population, and identity. In addition to that, the history not only unravels how this phenomenon lead to the establishment of the Sino-Soviet borders but also how it relates to China’s North-Western Frontier. History also explains the challenges these minorities had to overcome being a Muslim in China since the beginning of time. To further make sense of the unfortunate events that took place and the place in which these minorities hold in this present day, we must first investigate and study the history of China’s Islamic Frontiers.
